    Greetings Sunset Hill Community Association Members,

    Thank you for your membership! As President of the SHCA board, I want you to know that your membership is very important to us.

    Sunset Hill is fortunate to have a beautiful, vintage building. The SHCA all volunteer board works to keep the building financially stable and in top condition for its own sake, but also so that it’s attractive to renters. In addition to regular renters, such as yoga, Weight Watchers, dance and student-driving classes, SHCA is the venue for weddings, graduations and other one-time events. We have forged a successful relationship with Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) as our rental agent, so that we are able to provide the best rental opportunities possible in a financially successful way.

    At the same time, without volunteers who love the Clubhouse, we could not survive. One of our long-term board members, John Munroe, knows every inch of the building and takes physical care of it as if it was his own. It is humbling, really. Without a “heart and soul” like John’s I don’t know how the board could proceed. Another long-term board member, and past-president, Carol Beers, emailed me the other day because while she was at the SHCA office cleaning and sorting, she was thinking about how to address issues like our aging AV system for Kids’ Movie Nights. Our board can use help—could you help us out? We need expertise in the IT, publicity and physical plant areas, and need more board members.     It heartened us this year to become the home for the Ballard Civic Orchestra. The Orchestra is a “no-cost to the student” opportunity for local musicians to play with others and seasoned professionals. It is the kind of endeavor that anchors the Clubhouse in a work that is a true service to the community.

    In 2015 we also continued with the tradition of the Annual Wine Tasting, Kids” Movie Nights on Fridays, the Candidate Forum (City Council), Ballard Historical Society lectures and the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. We also hosted the “Save Our Substation” community meeting, the Ballard Writers’ Collective (13th annual), Thistle Theatre productions for families, a slide show by author Dean Adams about his book, Four Thousand Hooks, and “Concierto Posada,” a Christmas concert presented to a packed house by the Ballard Civic Orchestra complete with soprano and tenor vocals. Volunteer Tom Friedman wrote many letters to Metro on our behalf about Sunset Hill bus service, and we have a board member who is our rep on the Ballard District Council.

    I’m looking forward to seeing you at our Annual General Election and Meeting on January 25!

    We are pleased to have Councilmember Mike O’Brien (position 8) joining us. He will talk about his plans for our district. After that we are invited upstairs for a short program from the Ballard Civic Orchestra, which now has residence in our clubhouse. If you caught their “Concierto Posada” in December, you’ll agree they are worth following! Light refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6:45 pm.
