Barber Shop to ask about a public gathering to remember Gene George.

Donna Williams, Gene’s colleague at the Sunset Hill Barber Shop, will hold a public celebration in memory of Gene’s life at the Sunset Hill Community Association, 3003 NW 66th Street, on Tuesday June 11th, 6:30-9:30pm.
Donna plans this gathering as a remembrance of Gene George’s life, a time for the community to share memories and stories. Donna would appreciate volunteer assistance to coordinate and host this community memorial celebration/potluck,
as she expects to be a bit tearful and emotional during Gene’s life celebration. Please contact Donna at the Sunset Hill Barbershop, 206-465-7803.

A letter to the community from Donna Williams: 

My name is Donna. I have been Gene’s friend and co-worker for 20 years. I am heartbroken at our loss. Even though his health was failing this past year, he continued to try working. He was happiest when he held court at the barbershop especially the years since his wife passed away. I am so glad that everyone is remembering Gene with kind thoughts. He was not himself this past year and those who knew him well realized something was terribly wrong. Please always remember the real Gene, the one who gave everyone young or old his heart and 35 years of his physical strength to make all look better then when they entered. He always greeted with a genuine smile, a joke and a great haircut. I will miss him everyday, he was my mentor and friend for over 23 years. His daughter has given me her blessing to organize a “Celebration of his Life”;  I am planning a community memorial celebration Tuesday evening, June 11th, at SHCA.   A potluck would make us all feel like were doing this together. If anyone has the time to help me plan, please stop by the shop, as I’m not much of a computer person. Also I’m hoping someone very close to Gene over the years will volunteer to moderate. I would be too emotional.

We cannot function without your support, and we hope to engage your energy and imagination in 2013.

What’s new? Our  communications volunteers have created this interactive website, and an e-newsletter published periodically through the year. If you have articles or stories of community interest, let us know! Your comments are welcome on our website and on our fabulous Facebook page, www.facebook.com/sunsethillcommunity.

New rental partnership: SHCA has entered into a rental partnership with the Phinney Neighborhood Association.  PNA now manages all our rentals and also provides custodial care to keep the building in tip-top shape for your meetings, celebrations, etc. We have lowered some rental rates for weekday events. It’s time to renew your membership! You can renew or join conveniently online, www.sunsethillcommunity.org/membership/.  Your continued support is necessary to sustain our community programming and provide tender loving care for our aging facility. Your membership runs for a full calendar year.

We also need some enterprising people to organize the auction at our annual wine tasting on Jan 23. 
This job entails contacting local businesses to obtain donations of auction items to benefit our neighborhood association.
The outreach work should be done in December or very early January.  If you can help with the auction, and/or with the wine tasting event, contact Carol at  <beers90@gmail.com>

 

We have begun our working partnership with PNA!   PNA is now managing all rental services for our historic SHCA clubhouse, including long-term rentals.

We continue to serve our long-term renters and honor long-term contracts until their expiration, which is generally at the end of this calendar year.  New long-term rental contracts for the upcoming year will be negotiated and administered by our PNA rental agent, Margaret Pai.

In the role of rental manager, PNA will support and enhance SHCA’s ability to make profitable use of our building, so that we can continue to maintain both the clubhouse and our community-focused neighborhood organization.

PNA will apply its professional staff and its broad outreach to market, rent and maintain the SHCA clubhouse.  Our 1929 meeting hall has become a unique part of the PNA rental inventory, and our distinctive space, with its stage and elegant windows, will be promoted to more prospective renters.  As our rental operation becomes more profitable, our community association becomes more financially sustainable. And as we become more financially secure, we can continue to serve Sunset Hill as a neighborhood center for community celebrations, educational programs, performances, and connecting with neighbors!
