CANCELLED: Bunraku Puppet Show 3/14, 15/20

Thistle Theatre, a puppet theatre for families, continues its 2019-20 season with “Funny Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling.” Based on a Japanese story, a funny woman jumps after a rice dumpling that bounced down into a crack in the earth. They dropped into another world made of Origami (folded paper). Following the road, she meets three statues of Jizo, who each warn her of danger. Unfortunately, an Oni (horned ogre) finds her and takes her to cook rice for them. The funny woman uses humor and her wile to adapt to changing situations. The show features the arts of Japan and transformations of scale.

Thistle Theatre is the only performing arts organization in the Pacific Northwest that specializes in Bunraku puppets, an ancient Japanese style of puppetry. The puppeteers, dressed head-to-toe in black to suggest invisibility, operate all of the character’s limbs by hand from behind. Thistle Theatre serves as a training ground for puppeteers/actors, designers, puppet builders, songwriters, and playwrights. The puppets, props, and scenery are designed and created by Thistle Theatre artists. Productions are carefully crafted to have layers of action and language to please audiences of all ages.

Thistle Theatre presents affordable, professional puppet theatre for families and schools at three locations in the Puget Sound area, including the Sunset Hill Community Association.
