SHCA Member Spotlight: Elsie & Stephen Hulsizer

SHCA Member Spotlight: Elsie & Stephen Hulsizer

About the Hulsizers:
Stephen and Elsie met while Elsie was an oceanography student and Stephen, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Washington. They both signed up to tutor children in 1968 during the MLK riots and the rest was history. The couple has lived in Sunset Hill since 1979 and have been members of SHCA for at least 15 years. Stephen was even an SHCA board member and moderated a panel at the club house between two politicians competing for a state legislator position. Both Elsie and Stephen are avid sailors and Elsie is presently on the board of the Center for Wooden Boats. Over the years they’ve enjoyed the annual SHCA meetings and wine tastings. After robust careers, Elsie working for organizations including City of Seattle Department of Community Development and Puget Sound Water Quality Authority Agency, and Stephen working for naval architecture firms, ship yards and Holland America, they have enjoyed sailing up the west coast of Vancouver Island all the way up to Alaska. Elsie is the author of several books, “Voyages to Windward: Sailing Adventures on Vancouver Island’s West Coast” and “Glaciers, Bears and Totems: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska” and has hosted presentations about her work at SHCA.
