Our Building

The following information is based, in part, on the City of Seattle Landmark Nomination for the Sunset Hill Community Hall, prepared by historian Holly Taylor of PastForward NW Cultural Services, with support from 4Culture.

The Sunset Hill Community Hall is located on a quarter-acre parcel at the southwest corner of 30th Avenue NW and NW 66th Street in Ballard’s Sunset Hill neighborhood. Everyone is welcome! Last year, thousands of people enjoyed one of our many classes and community events. We invite you to visit, and join us in building and sustaining a vibrant and inclusive community!

The Upper and Lower Halls are large open social halls. Both halls are heated in winter and cooled in summer, and are ADA-accessible, with a Limited-Use, Limited Application (LULA) passenger elevator for guests that require it, as well as an ADA-accessible bathroom in the Lower Hall.

The Sunset Hill Community Hall has a ground floor entrance at street level to the Lower Hall, with an entrance to the Upper Hall accessible by exterior stairway, or via an interior staircase or elevator. Our renters and guests use either the Lower Hall or Upper Hall, and often a combination of both. Depending on use, renters can use either hall, or do a building buy-out for larger, festive events. Our community events are often full-building celebrations.

The Lower Hall is 1100 square feet, with a pull-down service kitchen area, and two restrooms, and is perfect for hosting potlucks; meetings, workshops and informal gatherings. The capacity in the Lower Hall is 110 people, and includes use of our two large, antique wooden tables and benches for seating of up to 12-14 people.

Additional 6-foot banquet tables and chairs are available, along with a pull down projector screen for movies; slideshows and presentations. Our Lower Hall is used for SHCH Family Movie Night and also the SHCH drop-in Artist Happy Hour. Previous renters have used the Lower Hall for corporate retreats; family dinners; cub scout meetings; graduation parties; and volunteer meet-ups.

The expansive Upper Hall, at 1500 square feet, features 13 foot ceilings and is entirely open and light-filled. Pendant lights, ceiling fans, theatrical lights, wall sconces and even a disco ball suspended from the ceiling join banks of windows on both sides of the great room.

A varnished white oak floor enhances the lightness of the room. A 16 foot wide by 14 foot deep stage at the south end of the Upper Hall is flanked by a pair of enclosed low stairs. At the rear of the stage are a screened-off service kitchen and restrooms. The capacity of the Upper Hall is 140 people.

Numerous 8-foot banquet tables and chairs are available, along with a pull down projector screen for movies; slideshows and presentations. Our Upper Hall hosts weekly dance classes and social dances; children’s ballet; early childhood music and movement classes; weekly yoga classes; orchestra and choir rehearsals; theatre workshops and a yearly holiday pop-up Panto theatre, among many other arts and private events.
